Beyond On-Campus Interviews
National statistics indicate that only 22% of students obtain their
jobs from OCI.
Do you feel as though OCI has passed you by?
Check out the resources below on how to locate employers who hire after
the fall season.
1. Small and Mid–Size Law Firms. For the majority of small to mid–sized
firms, there is no ?set? hiring period. These firms hire when the need
arises. This means that you may need to make contact in the fall,
winter and spring.
a) Do your homework and know the firm's practice before you conduct
outreach.
- Martindale Hubbell, www.martindale.com, click on
advanced search for lawyer locator
- USPTO, www.uspto.gov, search for patent attorneys
by state
- Westlaw, Career Library, search for bios of
attorneys
- Fresh Patents, www.freshpatents.com, you can search
by industry and locate firms and attorneys who would value your
expertise.
- The Yellowpages. Yes it is true, this is one of the best ways to locate attorneys by practice areas.
There are no set hiring dates for state government jobs. The best way to find a job is to contact an attorney within the agency where you want to work. To find the listing of state agencies go to the home page of the state which can be accessed at www."insert name of state".gov.
For federal jobs go to the Government Jobs Handbook Username: fig Password: newton2. Contains job descriptions, agency contacts information and deadlines. Available in hard copy in Career Services.
3. Public Interest Organizations.
Most organizations do not begin hiring until late fall or early spring, but when they begin hiring, they are looking for students who share a passion for and demonstrate a commitment to particular
causes. Use your time to cultivate contacts and follow through on your passion for public service:
b) PSLawNet, www.pslawnet.org, allows you to search for opportunities/organizations. PSLawNet requires all new users to register and create a username/password. Registration is free and provides access to password.
4. Corporations
Most corporate summer jobs will not lead to an offer after graduation; however, they still offer great experience. If a corporation has a formal summer program, typically it will be advertised on their website. Additionally, you can locate corporate counsel by looking at the following located in the Career Services Office.
- The Directory of Corporate Counsel
- The New England In–House Counsel Directory
- INTA Directory
