Professor Carroll has been involved with the Patent Practice and Procedure Program at Pierce Law for over 10 years. He began teaching with the late Professor Bob Shaw, the originator of the program, and helped to pioneer the current format of the program.

Professor Carroll has over 15 years of experience in the field of patent prosecution. After receiving a BS in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Notre Dame, he began his career as a patent examiner at the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO). Based on his past experience at the USPTO, Professor Carroll provides students with his insights on how to interact with the USPTO and most importantly how to negotiate with patent examiners.

Professor Carroll is also a partner with the intellectual property law firm of Grossman, Tucker, Perreault & Pfleger, PLLC in Manchester, NH, where his practice focuses on patent prosecution, opinion work, licensing, and IP counseling.

Professor Carroll's teaching draws on his day–to–day experience in representing clients ranging from independent inventors to Fortune 500 companies. In the continually evolving area of patent law, Professor Carroll relies on his current practice to reflect on how changes in patent laws and rules impact the ultimate goal of patent practice – obtaining valuable patent assets.

When he is not practicing law or teaching, Professor Carroll may be found skiing with his children, biking, running, kayaking or playing guitar.
