Gordon Smith wears many different hats: Pierce Law Trustee in Concord, NH; chair of AUS Consultants in Moorestown, NJ; and teacher of IP Valuation at Pierce Law and around the world. This week he is teaching a 3-day "Valuation & Licensing of Intellectual Property" course in Moscow, Russia.

Smith has been well known as an expert in matters of valuation for more than 45 years.  Initially his work was grounded in valuation of real property, ranging from public utilities to circus wagons. He was at the leading edge of intellectual property valuation as it became an emerging field in the late 1960s.

In 1983 he founded AUS Consultants Valuation Services Group to provide services in intellectual property. He is frequently consulted as an expert in royalty rates, economic life and litigation damages. He has published widely on the topics and has lectured on valuation subjects in North and South America, Europe and Asia.

Smith's ties to Pierce Law stem from a meeting with Professor Karl Jorda in 1988.  Since then he has taught IP Valuation at every Pierce Law Intellectual Property Summer Institute and has been a speaker at the Advanced Licensing Institute as well.

"I find the atmosphere in Concord stimulating," Smith says.  "I am very much in favor of the practical, hands-on approach that permeates the Pierce Law program."

Associate Dean Susan Richey is enthusiastic about the long-term association of  Pierce Law and Smith. "We are fortunate to have someone who is so well-versed in daily developments in IP Valuation.  His experience gives our students a grounding unmatchable in texts.  He brings life to case studies."

Smith follows his course in Russia with an assignment in Switzerland.  He will lecture on "Financial Issues in IP Management" at the World Intellectual Property Organization in Geneva in October.
