3L Kiera Slye spent her summer helping convicted criminals overcome discrimination in Rochester, NY, getting hands-on experience in Re-entry Law. She was one of four Pierce Law students taking public interest positions as Equal Justice Works Summer Corps members for 2008.

As a summer associate in the Law Students in Action Project in Monroe County, Slye interacted with clients, organized projects and performed legal research.

"My position at the Monroe County Legal Assistance Center added a practical element to my studies," Slye said.

Even though Slye calls western New York home, her work with convicted criminals gave her new knowledge about those who are her neighbors. "This position opened my eyes to the perseverance of individuals that are truly trying to get their lives back on track.  They constantly face hurdles because of bad decisions they made in their past.  Often their very distant past."

The EJW Summer Corps provides critically needed legal assistance to low-income and underserved communities in 38 states and the District of Columbia.  Positions in the Summer Corps are limited and the selection process is competitive.
