Professor Mary Wong is representing Pierce Law at this week's Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) meeting in Cairo, Egypt. She joins more than 1000 delegates from around the world.

Prof. Mary W.S. WongICANN is responsible for the global coordination of the Internet's system of unique identifiers like domain names and the addresses used in a variety of Internet protocols that help computers reach each other over the internet.  It is an internationally organized, public benefit non-profit company.

Dr. Paul Twomey, President and CEO of ICANN, commented about the business to be conducted at the meeting, “There are 1.5 billion Internet users in the world and growing and there are only 21 generic top level names from which people can choose.  We're currently facilitating the biggest expansion to the domain name system since its inception and this meeting will see further consultation with the internet community so that all aspects of the draft gTLD policy are thoroughly discussed.”

Pierce Law is a member of the Noncommercial User Consitutency (NCUC), one of ICANN's six Constituencies that provide feedback to the ICANN Board on internet policy issues. Wong says, "NCUC represents what we consider a very important stakeholder group--all noncommercial users of the internet--and aims to contribute balanced input to ICANN decisions that could otherwise be dominated by business lobbies and government preferences."

Wong's areas of specialization are intellectual property and information technology laws, with particular focus on the legal and policy challenges of diginal technology and the internet, both domestically and internationally.
