NH Civics Ed Group that Includes Justice Souter Co-Led by Dean Hutson
Retired Supreme Court Justice David Souter is a member of the Civics Outcomes Task Force that had its first meeting at Franklin Pierce Law Center in Concord Wednesday. The Justice has made the promotion of civics education in New Hampshire schools K-12 a priority of his retirement. The task force is co-chaired by Dean John Hutson and President Tom Galligan Jr of Colby-Sawyer College.
Justice Souter finds civics education such a priority that he made it the subject of his keynote address to the American Bar Association Meeting Annual Meeting this summer. He was spurred in his interest by the interactive civics instruction website developed by retired Justice Sandra Day O’Connor and his personal experiences in learning about the responsibilities of citizens through the democratic processes he observed as a boy attending New Hampshire town meetings.
NECN TV Reports on the task force meeting (video follows short NECN promo):
The task force was created by the New Hampshire Supreme Court Society; members include representatives of the Society, related non-profits and educators. Included from Pierce Law are Professor John Burwell Garvey, director of the Daniel Webster Scholar Honors Program, Professor Dana Irwin, and student Christopher G. Ulrich, a former social studies teacher.
