Scholarships for Entering Students
Robert B. Benson Scholarship
Named in honor of the former chair of the Board of Trustees of Franklin Pierce Law Center, this scholarship provides $1,500 to the entering student who has demonstrated excellence in engineering or science. The award will be made at admission, based on information in the application for admission.
Scholarships for 2nd and 3rd Year Students
These awards will be announced in Spring 2009
The Rapee Scholarship
Friends and family of Doris Rapee established this scholarship which will provide $1,000 in 2009 to one 2L or 3L female student who intends to pursue a career in the public sector. Preference is given to those interested in government service on the local, state, or federal level.
Bruce E. Friedman Scholarship
Named after a professor and former Director of the Law Clinics, the $1,000 award is given to a current student (2L or 3L) who demonstrates a dedicated commitment to social justice and public interest law, preparing for a career that advances social justice through course work combining legal knowledge with practical skills, project development, and exposure to practice models for the delivery of legal services. Two Friedman scholarships will be awarded in 2009.
Douglas J. Wood Chairman's Scholarship
These scholarships are funded from a donation by 1976 alumnus Douglas J. Wood through a gift he received for distinguished service to a client. Wood Scholars are selected from second- and third-year students who did not receive Dean's Merit Scholarships upon matriculation and who have demonstrated academic excellence, keen writing ability and service to the law school.
Yacos Prize
The Yacos Prize is a national award honoring the memory of Judge James E. Yacos, former chief judge of the U.S. Bankruptcy Court in New Hampshire. It is awarded annually for exceptional merit in commercial or business law. It is available to all law students. The award is announced in the fall. A selection committee awards the prize at a special ceremony.
Winnie McLaughlin Women's Scholarship
Named for Agnes Winifred McLaughlin, the first woman admitted to practice law in New Hampshire, this scholarship was established by Pierce Law and the New Hampshire Women's Bar Association. It is awarded to a continuing woman student entering the second year at Pierce Law who has demonstrated a commitment to community service focused on advancing women in society, and demonstrated academic achievment. The scholarship is for $5,000 toward tuition. Applications will be distributed in early spring; the deadline for submission is April 1.
Robert M. Viles Scholarship
Robert Viles was the Co-Founder, President and Dean of Franklin Pierce Law Center until 1997. This award honors his vision to produce graduates with "broad legal training who could make contributions to the world." In 2009 this $3,000 scholarship will be awarded to one 2L and to one 3L who have shown an interest in pursuing a career in community lawyering, a commitment to providing essential legal services within a local community.
Loan Repayment Assistance Program (LRAP)
Pierce Law maintains two funds to assist loan repayment of graduates who enter public interest careers.
