Teaching assistant - research assistant policy

Teaching Assistants

1. In first-year courses, the usual number of Teaching Assistants (TA's) a faculty member may have is determined by the total enrollment in the course. Total enrollment also determines the aggregate work hours per week for all TA's in a course. Individual TA's usually work from 10 to 15 hours per week and are not permitted to work in excess of 20 hours per week. The following chart illustrates the policy:

Enrollment per course Usual Aggregate

From To #TA Hours/week
15 30 1 15
31 60 2 30
61 90 3 45

Example: The faculty member who teaches a course with an enrollment of 75 students could hire TA's sufficient to cover a maximum of 45 hours per week. Combinations could include 9 TA's for 5 hours each (9 x 5 = 45 hours); 3 TA's for 15 hours each (3 x 15 = 45) or 3 TA's-1 for 20 hours, 1 for 15 hours and 1 for 10 hours (20 + 15 + 10 = 45)

A faculty member may not hire TA's for more aggregate hours per week than indicated above and indeed may hire TA's for less than the maximum aggregate hours indicated.

2. In upper level courses, a faculty member may have one Teaching Assistant (TA) per course if either the enrollment is greater than 59 students or it is the faculty member's first time teaching the course. The TA usually works from 10 to 15 hours per week and is not permitted to work in excess of 20 hours per week.

Adjustments to the total hours per week of teaching assistance a faculty member may have in a particular course is at the discretion of the Dean.

The total number of hours per week each TA will be expected to work is determined by the instructor (within the weekly limits noted above) and will be communicated to the student in a written job description prepared by the faculty member. A copy of that written job description shall be sent to the Director of Financial Aid at the same time that it is given to the student.

Teaching Assistants will be paid at an hourly rate determined in annual budget preparations. In order to receive payment, time sheets, signed by the instructor, must be submitted to the Business Office in accordance with the published schedule.

Any Teaching Assistants hired for reasons other than noted in # 1 or # 2 above, will be paid from the individual faculty member's budgeted account.

Teaching Assistants hired under this policy will be paid under the Federal Work-Study (FWS) program whenever the student is eligible to receive such funding. The Director of Financial Aid will make revisions, as required, to the FWS Authorization, Federal Unsubsidized Stafford Loan, or other assistance (including private loans).

Students ineligible for federal funding will be paid under the Franklin Pierce Law Center payroll.

Waiver of any of the terms of this policy is at the discretion of the Dean.

Research Assistants

A faculty member may have a Research Assistant (RA) only with the written permission of the Dean and only in response to a written request from the faculty member to the Dean. The faculty member's written request should specify the scope and goal of the research and the expected date of completion of a publishable work product. The written request should also indicate whether the faculty member has had a research assistant in the past and how that research assistant was used.

The desired number of hours per week and term of employment (Fall, Spring or Summer) should be contained in the faculty member's written request to the Dean for an RA.

The number of hours of work per week (not to exceed 20) and the hourly pay rate for an RA is to be determined by the Dean. Unless expressly permitted by the Dean, an RA may not be used to perform duties normally carried out by a TA.

Research Assistants will be paid at an hourly rate determined by the Dean. In order to receive payment, time sheets, signed by the instructor, must be submitted to the Business Office in accordance with the published schedule.

Any Research Assistants hired other than as noted above, will be paid from the individual faculty member's budgeted account.

Research Assistants hired under this policy will be paid under the Federal Work-Study (FWS) program whenever the student is eligible to receive such funding. The Director of Financial Aid, as required will make revisions to the FWS Authorization, Federal Unsubsidized Stafford Loan, or other assistance (including private loans).

Students ineligible for federal funding will be paid under the Franklin Pierce Law Center payroll.

Waiver of any of the terms of this policy is at the discretion of the Dean.
